Careers
At Prairiewood High School, careers education is designed to guide students step-by-step from discovering their interests to taking their first confident steps into further education, training, or the workforce. We work closely with universities, training providers, group training organisations, and apprenticeship and traineeship networks to connect students with real-world opportunities.
Our programs follow a staged approach:
- Stage 4 - Career Discovery and Exploration: Students begin exploring different jobs, industries, and study options through engaging activities, guest speakers, and hands-on experiences.
- Stage 5 - Career Focus and Planning: Students start matching their interests and skills with possible pathways, learn about subject selection, and prepare for senior school with work experience opportunities.
- Stage 6 - Career Deciding and Applying: Students receive tailored guidance to finalise their post-school plans, prepare applications for university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment, and develop job-readiness skills.
We are proud to offer exciting partnerships, such as the ABCN–Westpac “Gen STEM” program, which began in 2024 with our Year 8 Targeted Support students and will continue with them until graduation in Year 12, and the pilot University of Sydney Khuder Scholarship program, encouraging high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds to aim for university. Our STEM focus extends across Years 8–12, with university-run workshops, ABCN mentoring programs, and industry connections.
We support all students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, refugee and international students, and those seeking scholarships, cadetships, or targeted programs to meet their career needs and create effective pathways. Senior students can also take TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training) subjects alongside their HSC, gaining practical qualifications. In Year 10, work experience provides valuable insight into different industries, while career expos, seminars and information sessions, onsite and off site, open doors to a variety of pathways.
By the time students leave Prairiewood High School, they have explored, planned, and acted on their career goals, leaving school ready to take on the future with confidence.
