Parent Wellbeing Survey

Supporting student wellbeing is of upmost importance at Prairiewood High School. One of the School Plan 2018-20 strategic directions is "Excellence in Wellbeing". In 2020, we are evaluating our practices.

We are inviting students, staff and parents/families to participate in a survey. The 10 minute survey will seek to gather information that will inform the evaluation. The evaluation is seeing to answer the question: Are current Student Wellbeing services at Prairiewood HS effectively and efficiently supporting student wellbeing, engagement and attendance?

We thank you for your time. The survey can be accessed at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StudentWellbeingParentsurvey

We will also have two parent focus groups. If you would like to be involved in a deeper interview focus group, please contact the school and ask for a Head Teacher Wellbeing.

Thank you,

Ms Giudice

PHS win Gold, Silver and Bronze at Triathlons

Last Wednesday, 26/2/20 at the All Schools Triathlon Individual Event - Penrith International Regatta Centre PHS had one entrant, Kristie Caplikas of year 12. Kristie competed in the senior girls event and came 1st, winning gold in CHS and 3rd, winning bronze in All Schools. So two medals were awarded to Kristie for this event. A fantastic individual performance for her in extreme heat.

Yesterday, 27/2/20 at the All Schools Triathlon Teams Event - Penrith International Regatta Centre PHS entered 5 teams.

1 team of senior (17+ years) girls Georgia Elphinston (swim), Kristie Caplikas (cycle) and Hannah Truong (run).

These girls finished the day with 2nd in NSW CHS schools as well as coming 3rd overall in All Schools. This result is the best teams result PHS has ever achieved with Georgia, Kristie and Hannah being awarded 2 medals for this event. Even more impressive was the fact that Hannah is only 14 years old competing in the seniors event.

1 team of intermediate (15&16 years) boys Dylan Truong (swim), Andy Vu (cycle) and Jayden Lay (run). The boys finished 12th in NSW CHS schools.

1 team of intermediate (15&16 years) girls Olivia Elphinston (swim), Rachel O'Halloran (cycle) and Miranda Nguyen (run). The girls finished 23rd in NSW CHS schools.

2 teams of senior (17+ years) boys Team 1 - Ethan Le (swim), Marko Veledinovic (cycle) and Nicholas Pinoschi (run). Team 1 finished 53rd in NSW CHS schools. Team 2 - Brandon Tran (swim), Jayden Truong (cycle) and Ryan Vilaythong (run). Team 2 finished 70th in NSW CHS schools.

Overall fantastic results both individually and as a group of five PHS teams. The event is not only physically challenging but each student is competing against over 100 students and must execute each leg of the race and transition legally and quickly. All students participated to the best of their abilities, supported each other throughout the long day and did Prairiewood High School proud. Well done crew.

Ms Dixon

Angella Pham and Vivien Chor are two Year 12 Prairiewood students with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) . Due to the generosity of full sponsorship by the Sydney Women’s Fund, under the auspice of the Harding Miller Education Foundation, the girls attended the one-week Honeywell Engineering Summer School in December 2019.

Currently, Vivien is interested in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, whilst Angella’s long-held aspiration to become a marine biologist has seriously been challenged by her experiences at the Engineering School.

Congratulations to the girls for embracing such a challenging, yet inspiring, high quality event! What insight and knowledge the girls have acquired about possible futures in Engineering , as a result of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Visual feast of student work at 2020 ARTEXPRESS

Please click on this article which outlines why PHS received this wonderful award.

The Visual Arts faculty at Prairiewood High School is incredibly honoured and humbled to be recognised with this prestigious statewide award. It is wonderful to be acknowledged for our continued commitment to making a broad and significant contribution to the Visual Arts in NSW public education.

Congratulations to our student, Shantelle Morrison, on her striking body of work, an abstract painting which celebrates femininity through the incorporation of symbolic abstract curved shapes and a soft colour palette. Shantelle was fortunate to have her work selected for Artexpress, where it is currently on exhibition at the prestigious Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Equally important, five of the 2019 Visual Arts cohort were nominated for the esteemed Artexpress exhibition, an annual art display that showcases the top two percent of students artworks from across the state. Together with the talented Shantelle, other students nominated for Artexpress include Sammi Tran, Angelina Macca, Jing He and Amy Qiu. Amy’s work was also selected for Artexpress, and is currently on display at the Margaret Whitlam Gallery, Western Sydney University. Furthermore, 67% of our Visual Arts cohort achieved a band 6 in the 2019 HSC examination, a notable attainment from a hardworking group of students.

The Visual Arts students, across all year groups at Prairiewood High School, are incredibly talented and committed. They engage strongly with the Visual Arts. I am a big advocate of laying the foundations early to foster a robust skillset, combined with sustained and reflective artistic practice.

We are also extremely lucky to have an incredibly supportive principal, Belinda Giudice, and senior executive who value the arts and help to promote our subject to the school, and within the local and wider community. I cannot stress enough the benefits of the arts in education, to instil a range of skills - creative and critical thinking, problem solving, time management and organisation, as well as an increase in confidence and resilience. Each of these qualities can positively impact academic achievement across all subjects, and beyond the school environment to create well rounded learners and responsible, informed and active citizens.

The Visual Arts faculty at Prairiewood High School support student success through highly engaging quality programming and teaching. We are fortunate to have dedicated Visual Arts teachers with a passion and enthusiasm for the subject, and an innate desire to nurture students to achieve to their absolute creative potential.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Book Week Visit by Author, Boori Monty Pryor

To celebrate Book Week at Prairiewood High School last week, Mrs Marlow organized for prize winning Aboriginal author, Boori Monty Pryor to visit. He used a song from his book "Shake A Leg" about children looking for honey and being chased by the bees. He taught the students the words in his Indigenous language and the actions.
Boori showed the students a video of professional dancers performing the song and then students used this to plan & draw their own stories, based on the song. The Indigenous students, their invited friends and the Support Unit students painted their stories on to canvas to be displayed around the school.
Boori also played the didgeridoo & clap sticks, performing for the students and to thank the parents from the Vietnamese Community Kitchen, who catered for the event with their usual tasty feast.
Daniel Tiglao, from the Support unit presented Boori with a thank you card that he and his mother made and thanked Boori for a great day of celebrating Aboriginal culture.
We captured some of the highlights in photos in an album in our Gallery.

Congratulations to our winners in the Public Education Foundation Awards!!!!

These awards celebrate outstanding achievement in public education.

Outstanding student achievement and inspiring public education staff were acknowledged last night, when over 110 individuals and schools were honoured at the 2019 NSW Minister’s and Secretary’s Awards for Excellence.

Prairiewood High School took out the following awards:

We highlighted PHS achievements through our extraordinary Community Inclusion programs. We were joined by Le’s daughter and a number of parents across our community to celebrate our successes together. Thank you to all staff and parents who attended to support our school.

Please see the Album in our gallery for more photos.

The annual awards showcased NSW public school students, teachers, staff and parents who have made major contributions to their school communities and served as role models to their peers.

They also acknowledged schools that have embraced innovative programs to turn around school results and are changing the way education is delivered within the government system.

The NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, said the awards affirmed the high standards and dedication that underpinned the public school system.

“These awards highlight the tremendous contribution that students, teachers, principals and the school community make to public education in NSW as we strive for learning and teaching excellence,” Ms Mitchell said.

On Friday 16th August, 2019, six students and six staff members from Nakasato Junior High School in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, came to Prairiewood High School for a day visit. Together with some of our Stage 5 Japanese students, they participated in a number of activities including a game of cricket, Aboriginal dot painting, learning Australian slang, as well as watching some of our acts from the PHS Multicultural concert this year.

For morning tea they tasted for the first time, local Australian treats such as vegemite on crackers, lamingtons, Tim Tams and fairy bread. For lunch our Vietnamese Community Kitchen cooked up a feast for our guests. Everyone enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing their experiences over a dish of Vietnamese cuisine cooked by Mrs Ngo's parents from the Community Kitchen.

This was an unforgettable experience for both Nakasato and PHS students.
Thanks to Ms Giudice and Ms Li for making this opportunity possible!

Biology Excursion to Penrith Lakes

Last term our Year 11 Biology students went to Penrith Lakes as part of their Depth Study research project. They were required to collect data from the lake ecosystem and learn about ecosystem management.

Although this excursion was part of the Biology Depth Study Assessment task, our students thoroughly enjoyed every activity they participated in. They learned how to use equipment like a clinometer, pH meter, luxmeter, anemometer etc. They used techniques like dip netting to estimate the population of the organisms and critically analysed the events that lead to the creation of the Penrith lakes.

As teachers, it was a pleasure to see Year 11 Biology students participating in research-based activities like scientists. They are of course, our budding future scientists!

Year 11 ABCN students Complete their Aspirations Program

The ABCN Aspirations Program 2019

The ABCN Aspirations Digital Pilot Program is an opportunity that we feel privileged to have been a part of as it helped us all grow in so many different ways. It gave us an understanding of what employers expect from employees in a modern workplace and it really got us ready for the future we all have ahead of us. The program itself was split into four sessions that covered key skills, attitudes and values that are useful when trying to apply for different jobs. The eight of us involved were: Angella Pham, Angelina Tran, Vivien Chor, Cindy Doan-Vo, Ella-Rose Smee, Jennifer Lu, Georgia Elphinston and myself, Vivian Quach.

29th May 2019: Session 1, Introduction to the Working World

On our very first session, we were introduced to the world beyond school. To begin with, getting an idea of what a modern working environment is like was very exciting. Personally, I had expected American Express to have the old school office conditions (very grey… you know what I mean), however, it was nothing like what I expected. We were given a tour of several floors in the building and we were all astonished by the vibrant colours that filled every room, and the bright feeling that came from the environment. We learnt that the interior of the building was recently renovated, from a dark to light colours, for the benefits of the employees there, and it was comforting to know that companies acknowledge even problems like these, in order to create a better and comforting working environment.

Apart from the building tour, we were introduced to our mentors, who educated us on how to build positive relationships in the workplace and positive working behaviours. Communication is key in the workplace, and in general, we just need to be a good person. We discovered the best way to treat people is to treat them the way you want to be treated. So, the respect we give to people, our manners, and facial expressions, all need to be genuine in order to build quality relationships in a working environment. We need to dress appropriately, and our mindset needs to be positive.

In addition to this, we were made aware of the importance of technology and the positive and negative affects it could have on us. Our world is advancing very quickly to be very technology driven, so it’s important we know our boundary. Social media is a way for our employers to ‘track’ us, therefore, it is crucial for us to know that what we post and what we are tagged in could possibly lead to serious consequences.

5th June 2019: Session 2, Creating your ‘Personal Brand’

Our second session was held at the school (to be specific, the PPBL room), and again, it was a new experience for us, as we never would have thought we would be video calling our mentors. In this session, we established that we all have our own personal brand and it’s important we look after the image we produce. We learnt where our strengths and weaknesses are and the significance of knowing them in order to make decisions about pathways beyond school. This is so we can understand what our goal is, and if we know these things, we can successfully promote ourselves to our future employers.

Furthermore, we acquired knowledge of what an elevator pitch is (a presentation that grabs attention and says a lot in a few words). It’s a way to introduce yourself and manifest the reasons why you should be hired. By learning this, we will be able to confidently introduce ourselves in an interview, without panicking or getting a mind blank.

18th June 2019: Session 3, What do Employers want?

Again, this session was delivered to us at school (dance studio this time) through video calling and honestly, it saves so much time and after we got over the embarrassment of being on camera, it’s very convenient. This session, we were given notice of the eight key employability skills that employers looks for:

- Communication

- Initiative

- Problem solving

- Teamwork

- Self-management

- Learning

- Planning and organising

- Digital literacy

In addition to this, our mentors told us about their experience and their career stories. From this, we’ve learnt that the jobs we choose must be something we are passionate about or motivated by. Because only then will be love it and try our very best in it.

From my mentor (David), I learnt that not all interviews are the same. They range from situational interviews, to behaviour-based interviews, to sight tests, and capability tests. I had no idea about these things before this session and I was glad I was able to be aware of this. Moreover, in this session, we switched mentors for a few minutes, and I was able to gain experience from another mentor (Amy), on how to ace an interview:

- Prepare + research

- Speak to people who know about the company/ position you are applying for

16th June 2019: Session 4, Interview Success

Our final session was the session that tied everything we learnt together, and this session was interactive and probably gave me the most experience. It was fun to learn how to prep yourself before an interview, such as standing in a power pose to become more confident, how to shake someone’s hand, and learning how to do small talk. It was a bit awkward to put it into practice, but at the end of the day, it’s something that all of us will remember for most of our lives. We learnt how to make a good first impression, which begins right from the moment we step into the building where we are being interviewed.

We learnt the basic structure of an interview (introduction, interview questions, job information, questions) and how to tackle behavioural based questions in interviews, using the simple acronym SAO:

- Situation

- Action

- Outcome

To link this all together, we did a mock interview with all our mentors combining all the information and skills we learnt from all the sessions. The constructive feedback each mentor gave us was amazing and it really boosted our confidence. It’s times like these that you realise that we need to step out of our comfort zones in order to experience the best of life. These sessions taught us how to prepare for an interview and it taught us the basic skills that are needed in the outside world.

Overall, the ABCN inspirations program was a valuable and unforgettable learning experience and every single one of the mentors (David, Amy, Steven and Natalie) who took time out of their busy lives to guide all of us through this program and it really inspired all of us to try to reach for the brightest goal possible (I guess that’s why they call it the inspirations program, I don’t know). Not sure if anyone has said it yet but I also want to thank Joanna whose enthusiasm and optimism really made us look forward to every session. Also, thank you to Ms Evans for reaching out to get us an opportunity like this and finally, Ms Richardson, who accompanied us on our very last session.

P.S I’m sorry if I spelt any names incorrectly

Vivian Quach

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Another great year and again a lot to smile about with outstanding HSC results.

This is the ranking across all NSW government, catholic and independent schools. We are again the highest ranked school across our local community (all systems).

A significant number of students have received extraordinary ATARs with four students achieving above 98, 17 above 95 and 31 above 90. We are excited to have four nominations for the prestigious HSC ARTEXPRESS!

We congratulate:

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Meet our new Principal

Ms Belinda Giudice is our new Principal.

We welcomed Ms Giudice to Prairiewood High School at the beginning of term two. An introductory comment from Ms Giudice:

I have proudly begun my journey at Prairiewood High School at this term. I was fortunate enough to be given the honourable role of leading Prairiewood High School as Principal. I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Sarelle Young on an outstanding job as Relieving Principal after Mr Alan Maclean's departure to Caringbah High School as Principal. I thank both Mr Maclean and Mrs Young for their leadership of the school.

I would like to sincerely thank the staff, students and parents whom I have had contact with for their very kind welcome. It has been absolutely wonderful to meet so many staff, mingle with our students, attend some of our community programs and meet some parents. I am excited for upcoming events such as our mid-year presentation assembly, the P & C meeting and parent-teacher night.

My initial impressions of Prairiewood High School confirms the high expectations I have of a school that is focused on quality education in a caring and supportive environment; a teaching staff that teaches the students a love of learning and sense of belonging; a school that prides itself on high behavioural expectations and one that is trusted by the local community. I can see how and why the school was ranked 108th in the HSC in 2017. I congratulate the school community on this extraordinary achievement.

I come with a wealth of educational leadership experience and I look forward to working collaboratively with staff, students, parent/carers and university, business and community partners to lead innovative learning opportunities in and beyond the classroom.

I was the previous Principal at Canterbury Boys High School (2016 to end of term two 2018) and prior to this, I was the Co-Principal at Merrylands High School (2012 to the beginning of 2016). Prior to my Co-Principal role, I was a Deputy Principal, Head Teacher PDHPE and classroom teacher at Merrylands.

I am excited to lead a school that offers so much and reflects the inclusivity and the great aspects of public education; that is, over 1200 students reflective of a comprehensive, co-educational, partially selective school with a support unit.

I look forward to meeting and working collaboratively with school community members as Principal of Prairiewood High School.

Thank you,

Ms Belinda Giudice

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

For more information, read the media release by the Premier and Minister. The new policy and implementation guidelines (PDF 116.83KB) are available on the department's website.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

The Public Education Foundation has launched a new campaign promoting the importance of public schools to the community.

The online campaign helps raise awareness and instil confidence in parents and the community that our public schools provide a vibrant, inclusive and high quality education to all Australians.

The videos feature three famous Australians who credit their public education for equipping them with the skills and values that have enabled them to go on and make great contributions to society.

David Hetherington, executive director of the Public Education Foundation, said the campaign aims to highlight the impact of public schools to society.

"We believe that public schools are an essential pillar of Australian society. Tens of millions of Australians have benefited from public education as a springboard to happy and successful lives," Mr Hetherington said.

"We wanted to shine a light on this great national institution so we've asked a few famous Australians to share their stories."

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said the campaign represents our commitment to supporting our students.

"We want every student in public education to be known, valued and cared for and the Public Education Foundation campaign highlights our commitment to providing opportunities for all our young people to succeed," he said.

Television personality Craig Reucassel, a writer, comedian, and host of ABC TV's War on Waste, spoke about the impact of attending a public school on his career and life.

"One particular teacher established this debating and public speaking class, and it really changed how I saw a lot of things," he said.

"I think they instilled in me a lot of the interest in social justice that I have now."

The videos also feature Professor Larissa Behrendt, the first Aboriginal Harvard Law graduate, who spoke about the teacher who had the most impact on her at school.

"My English teacher, Miss O'Sullivan, was somebody who really shaped my confidence," she said. "I was encouraged to have a voice and be passionate about what's right and wrong."

The Hon. Michael Kirby, former Justice of the High Court of Australia, recalls the encouragement he received at school to strive for excellence.

"We were a public school, encouraging people to do what they want to do and with excellence."

"Excellence was the motto of my school," Mr Kirby said.

The three students featured in the videos attend Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts, Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus and Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School.

The Public Education Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing life-changing scholarships to young people in public education and enhancing the value and reputation of public schools.

More information on the foundation is available on their website.

Recently, we have updated our mobile phone and electronic device policy to help ensure the safe use of technology at school. A copy of the new policy was provided to all students during roll call, and is attached below. At PHS, we encourage the appropriate use of technology to support learning. The revised policy reflects the school's commitment to helping students use devices in a socially responsible manner. New Mobile Phone Policy (pdf 341 KB)

School Gates

Our School is highly appreciative of the support we receive from parents and the community, particularly in supporting our efforts to take appropriate steps to make the school as safe as possible.

Part of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students and staff at PHS is being able to account for all persons who enter onto the school grounds. The recent installation of electronic gates has helped to meet this goal. The continued support of students, parents and community members in using the gate nearest the office entrance which is the school's official entrance, is much appreciated. This gate has an intercom and, as such, allows our office staff to ensure persons with a valid reason are on school grounds.

Again, thank you to all for your continued support of our school.

HP BYOD Program

HP is an approved supplier of NSW DET laptops and currently Prairiewood have 60 laptops in trolleys for students use and have purchased an additional 90 laptops for use throughout the school.

The BYOD program encourages students to bring their own device to use at school and access the Internet through the protected NSW DET proxy environment..

HP has introduced a program for parents which can make the choice of device for their children easier.

The program helps parents select the right devices for their school's IT environment, maximising learning outcomes for students. Secondly, the program enables parents to purchase, school approved devices, direct from HP via a school branded online BYOD store. (link)

Attached is a flyer that introduces the program and details some prices and relevant dates.

Prairiewood High School does not gain any financial benefit from HP through the purchase of these laptops and is simply providing parents with an additional option when considering a BYOD for your child.
